Every day we get asked alot of questions from our customers regarding granite and the different choices that are availble for hard surfaces. Here we have put together what are the most frequent questions that we get asked. If you don't see your question answered here please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
What is granite?
Granite is formed when molten rock slowly cools under the Earth's surface. The nature of this cooling process results in the development of large crystals, natural veining and an endless range of colors. Over time the granite is pushed towards the surface of the Earth where it can be mined.
Why choose granite?
Granite has become one of the most popular countertop choices due to its natural beauty, durability and ease to care for.
Will granite scratch or chip?
Although scratches are rare, granite is a quartz-based mineral and can be scratched by something as hard or harder than it. To be safe, we recommend using a cutting board and being careful with large pots and pans along with certain types of stoneware dishes. Chips in granite are also uncommon. If a chip does occur it is important to save the piece or pieces and if possible one of our skilled craftsmen may be able to repair it.
How do you care for granite?
Granite is naturally a porous material and needs to be sealed periodically. We professionally apply a three-step sealer, which prevents staining and blocks bacteria. The sealer we use will last approx. five years with normal use. With some stones the sealer will last much longer. Mild stone cleaners or soap and water is all that is needed to maintain your granite countertop between sealings.
What are quartz countertops?
Quartz countertops are an engineered stone product used in residential and commercial kitchen and bath applications. Quartz countertops are made by mixing and compressing natural quartz, derived from granite, with epoxy based resins.
Why would I choose quartz?
Quartz countertops are made by a number of manufactures and therefore come in a wide variety of colors. If the natural veining and crystals in granite do not appeal to you, then the more consistant, uniform look of quartz may be the perfect choice for you. Quartz is a very durable, non-porous surface that does not need to be sealed as some other stone products do. It is very scratch and heat resistant, second only to granite.
